fortunately we can get some of this from our food, but that still sounds like a LOT of water.

Simple Tips for drinking enough water.

    • Carry a reusable water bottle with you.
    • Stop drinking soda (or any drink that contains sodium)
    • Eat watermelon and other water rich fruits and vegetables
    • Pre-hydrate when exercising (drink water BEFORE you go for a run)
    • Tasty up your water with some lemon

Why is it so important to drink water?

A few symptoms of chronic dehydration :

    • Loss of energy
    • Constipation
    • Digestive Problems
    • Acidic System
    • Eczema
    • Urinary Tract Infections
    • High Blood Pressure

Once you get into the habit of drinking enough water your body will start to expect it and you will start to enjoy and prefer the taste of water.

    How to Eat Raw Garlic

Raw garlic is delicious, it adds the perfect flavor to any dish, and is so easy to incorporate into any meal, and is very beneficial to your health.  It must be added fresh to obtain the most healthful benefits.  It can be added fresh to just about anything: salads, sauces, salsa, dips, soups, stews, and more!  Here are a few ideas on how to eat raw garlic. I would recommend getting a good garlic press, it is the easiest tool to use and the smaller the pieces of garlic, the more healthy benefits of garlic are available to you.

    Simple Salad

~ Pour a little bit of olive oil into a salad bowl

~ Press a few cloves of garlic and mix with oil ( The more cloves you use, the spicier it will be!)

~ Add fresh greens of your liking – kale, spinach, lettuce, herbs – and toss with garlic oil mixture until well coated

~ Squirt the juice of 1/2 lemon onto salad

~ Add fresh ground pepper or cheese if you’d like and serve!

    Spice Up Your Spagetti!

When buying marinara sauce in a jar, I find it very beneficial to the taste buds to warm it up on the stove top and add ingredients to make it your own.

~ Empty contents of jar of spagetti sauce into pot on stove and put on low heat

~ Add cheese, basil or rosemary, season salt and fresh ground pepper

~ Add pressed garlic and let simmer until it starts to bubble

~ For added spice, add more pressed garlic fresh right before you serve it

    Spicy Garlic Toast

~ Combine olive oil and freshly pressed garlic in a small bowl and let sit for 5 minutes.  Add pepper and salt if desired.

~ Spread garlic mixture onto pieces of toast

~ Add shredded parmesan cheese if desired

~ Sprinkle a little bit of salt and pepper

~ Toast in a toaster oven.  Delicious with your favorite pasta dish!

    Home Remedies for Head Lice

    What is Head Lice?

Head Lice are small wingless insects that need to feed on human blood to survive.  They attach themselves to clothing and hair and hide in the scalps of people.  There, they will feed on blood about 5 times a day.  Each day, a female will lay about six eggs, or nits, that will hatch in about a week.  So once you have head lice, it will spread pretty quickly.  They are fairly easy to get rid of, fortunately.  They will spread to more people through head to head contact, or contact with someone’s clothing, specifically head gear or something like a scarf that goes around the neck.  It is said that people with poor hygiene, or a dirty home are the people that get head lice first.  This is a myth. Personal hygiene and a clean home have nothing to do with someone getting head lice.

There are three different forms of head lice.  The nits, or eggs, that are laid are attached to the hair follicles.  They hatch into nymphs, who then turn into an adult louse.  The average life span of a single louse is about a month.

    Symptoms of Head Lice

The most common symptom, and probably the first one that is noticed, is frequent itching, especially in the back of the neck and other scalp areas.  This is caused by an allergic reaction to the saliva the lice use to penetrate the skin.  The itching can lead to small red bumps or sores on the scalp, another noticable symptom.  You may also feel a tickling or a feeling like something is moving in your hair.  Some people may experience swelling of lymph nodes on their neck.  If you have any of these symptoms and suspect you might have head lice, check your hair very carefully with a comb.  Nits, or eggs, are attached to the hair follicles and from afar can look like dandruff.  If you look carefully, you will see a yellowish white egg that is actually attached to the hair.

    Home Remedies for Head Lice

If you do a check and find out you have head lice, do not panic, and do NOT go rushing out to buy one of those special chemical lice-killing shampoos.  This was the case when I was a kid.  It seemed like the only solution.  It has been used for years on children and adults with head lice.  Your body absorbs whatever is massaged into the skin.  So you can either massage some chemical-laced shampoo into you head, or you can try some safe and effective home remedies first.  Think of it this way:  the more chemicals we use to try and kill bugs such as lice, the stronger they become, building up an immunity to the chemicals we use to kill it, creating Super Lice.  Try these home remedies using stuff you will probably already find in your house.

~A lot of people swear by combing mayonnaise through their hair and leaving it for two hours before combing it out.  Follow that with a rinse of apple cider vinegar and water.

~Massage your scalp with essential oil of rosemary.

~Rinse your hair daily with apple cider vinegar and really rub it into the scalp.

~Find a good shampoo that is infused with tea tree oil.

And remember, no matter what remedy you try, follow up with a careful comb-through of your hair.  The nits are the hardest part to get rid of, since they are so attached.  Really comb them out so that they do not hatch.  If they are allowed to hatch, you will have a repeat problem.  These remedies will kill the adult lice, but the nits need to be combed out.

    Good Luck and Good Health!

10 Simple Ideas for a Healthier Lifestyle

Of course everybody wants to be healthy and take care of their bodies,  but sometimes life gets in the way, doesn’t it?  Lack of time, the convenience factor, all these play a part in sometimes neglecting our body’s needs to help optimize one’s overall health.  Maybe some people just don’t know where to start!  We came up with ten very simple tips to help keep your body healthy and your energy levels functioning.  You wouldn’t believe how a little change can affect your body in a positive way. The most important tip is to always listen to your body.

Get some sunlight on a daily basis.

    getting_enough_sun

Keep in mind that moderation is key.  The sun can be very healthy for the body as long as it is not too much.  Your body will let you know, just listen.  The ultraviolet rays from the sun helps your skin produce loads of vitamin D, an essential vitamin in keeping up the immune system.  With proper levels of vitamin D, the body can protect itself against numerous diseases, even cancer.  Dr. Michael Holick, a dermatologist,  has written a book called, “The UV Advantage” that outlines all his research on the effects of sun on the body and the importance of vitamin D.  The sun can be very healthy for the skin, unless it gets to the point of burning.  So again, moderation is key.  It is also capable of lifting your spirits.  When I am feeling sluggish or a bit down, I just sit out in the sun and breathe some clean air and I feel motivated again.

Replace soda and sugary drinks with water or all natural fruit juices.

Sodas may seem like a good idea when you are thirsty and need a bit of a boost, but it is not worth it in the long run.  They will make you feel sluggish after a while and you feel like you need more, when what you really need is probably food!  Even sodas that claim to be better for your health than regular soda are really not good for you either when you get down to it.  Whether its high fructose corn syrup or some weird chemical sugar substitute, it is not good for your body. Ideally, it would be most beneficial to replace unhealthy drinks with water, but sometimes we need something with a little zing to it.  There are healthier choices when it comes to soda.  Did you know that there is a soda out there that uses all natural cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup?  There’s a good start right there.  Izze soda is a favorite brand of ours.  It is a fruity, carbonated beverage with no added sugar, just all natural fruit juices.  It is delicious and is a fantastic replacement for soda if you miss that fizzy flavorful drink.  As I said, water is ultimately the best alternative, plus, an added bonus, it’s free!  How’s that for an economy money saver?

    Buy local foods.

    locally_grown_food

Buying locally is the best way to ensure you are getting the highest possible quality out of your food.  Next time you are in a grocery store, pick up any “fresh” produce and think about how far it has traveled to get here, how many different trucks it has been on, and how many different conveyor belts it has ridden on.  Buying local fresh foods is a great way to be safely assured that you know exactly where your food has been and that it is as fresh as can be.  That is the best way to get the maximum nutrients that food can provide you.  You are also supporting your local economy and right now, I think we all need a little support.

Read something instead of watching television.

When you have some spare time, try to do something to exercise your mind, not paralyze it.  Read a magazine, a good book is preferable, or even a comic book!  But just reading is giving you some focus, which may help in future times where you need to focus and have a hard time.  Get your brain going and it will be easier to stimulate it at any given time.  By watching television, you are giving your brain a rest, it is just soaking in information by listening and not really working.  Ever notice how after watching hours of television, you feel groggy or tired?  It makes you feel sluggish and lazy, which leads to extended television watching.  Try relaxing with a good book, who knows you may learn something.

Don’t be afraid to try something new!

There are all kinds of healthy foods that can be substituted in meal preparation that you may have never heard of.  Go on, give it a try!  You might be surprised with what you might find and it could lead you down a nutritional path.  For example, have you heard about tempeh?  Also, any snacks you have around the house, there may be an equally delicious healthier alternative to them.  Seek it out, give it a shot, you might surprise yourself. As always, if you find something interesting, share it with us.

Stay away from stimulants late in the day.

You may need a pick-me-up, an extra boost in the late afternoon or early evening, just to get you through the rest of the day.  So a cup of coffee or a soda sounds like the best idea.  Wrong!  Consuming stimulants late in the day will throw your body off of its natural rhythms. This can cause you to loose sleep or have a poor quality of sleep. You will most likely feel tired the next day because of your lack of sleep and need more stimulants throughout the day to keep you going.  Its a vicious cycle.  It needs to stop somewhere.  There are healthier alternatives you can turn to for that extra energy boost. Try an all natural fruit juice that will boost your energy.  Or chew on a good fruit and nut bar.  Food is the best option because your body can convert that into energy.  Coffee or soda will give you a caffeine boost, but also stave off your appetite, so your body is running solely on that caffeine.  There are also vitamins you can supplement your diet with, but know that these vitamins do not supply your body with energy, they simply help your body convert food into energy more efficiently.  Then, when it is time to rest, your body will rest comfortably.

    Reduce unnecessary stress.

    Reducing stress through meditation

Everybody has stress, it is a fact of life.  But what can help is trying to get rid of unnecessary stress.  For example, always make sure you get up in the morning with plenty of time to get ready for work without having to rush at all.  Take a leisurely shower, sit down and read something while you have a small breakfast, and have a nice drive to work.  It steals a lot of energy from you to have to rush in the morning to make sure you make it to work on time.  It leaves you feeling drained when the day has just begun!  Whenever you feel stress, just take step back, analyze the situation, and ask yourself if there is an easy solution.  You will be surprised to find there usually is.

Replace unhealthy snacks with healthy ones.

Let’s face it, we all like to snack sometimes.  Sometimes it’s a habit, sometimes it’s because your hunger is just never satisfied.  It’s okay to snack, as long as you are snacking on something healthy.  Instead of munching on cheese puffs at work, try getting some granola.  It comes in many delicious combination flavors, so you can find something that will taste good to you.  It won’t fill you up or leave you sluggish, it will actually improve your overall condition throughout the day.  I used to be a fiend for fruit snacks.  I found an equally delicious healthy alternative in buying dried fruit such as mango, and golden raisins.  It gives that fruity, chewy experience I love, but without all the added chemicals and ingredients in making those dinosaur-shaped fruit snacks.  Just know that eating healthy does not mean eating snacks that taste like nothing, there are many delicious and nutritious snacks, you just need to be introduced to them!

Try to go for a short walk every day.

    daily_walking

The smallest bit of exercise for your body can do wonders.  And if you start out with a short walk everyday, you’d be surprised to see how easier it gets and how much better you feel.  A walk in the morning or evening time is ideal, when the sun is out, but the air is nice and cool.  If you can’t seem to find time to walk everyday, try just parking a distance away from your workplace or other destination.  Leave yourself a little time in the morning so you aren’t in a rush.

    Drink plenty of water.

I am sure everybody was told as a kid that you need to drink plenty of water.  Did anyone ever tell you why?  So you don’t become dehydrated?  Well, water plays a very important part in the functioning of our bodies.  It is essential for all of our vital organs to function at their optimal level.  It carries nutrients to the different parts of our bodies.  It helps in the breakdown of food so your liver does not have to work as hard.  It is essential for the proper functioning of the digestive system.  If you have problems with constipation, look at how much water you are consuming each day.  It may be as simple as that.  It doesn’t cost you anything to add water to your day.  Give a try, drink plenty of water throughout the day, everday, and see what happens.  You may feel less fatigue, you may see an improvement in your skin condition, you may feel less stomach discomfort.  Who knows, maybe by drinking water more often, you just may find the easiest cure for whatever ails you.

    Raw Garlic for Your Health

    rawgarlic

How does raw garlic work for your health?

When garlic is chopped or crushed, this action produces two sulfides, allicin sulfides and diallyl sulfides.  These sulfides are what produce all the health benefits of raw garlic.  Roasted garlic has no medicinal value because it is whole and it has been cooked to a high temperature.  Diallyl sulfides will survive cooking, but its medicinal value is not as high as the allicin sulfides.  Cooking chopped garlic will degrade the allicin, and microwaving it will destroy it all together.  To get the best garlic health, chop the garlic or press it into some olive oil and leave it for about 15 minutes.  Add it to the meal at the very end of cooking, or even to the plate once its been served.  The smaller the pieces of garlic, the more sulfides produced and the more medicinal value it will have.  Also, organic garlic bulbs will have a stronger taste, which means more sulphur content resulting in more medicinal value.

What does garlic cure or treat?

The allicin sulfide that is produced acts as an antibiotic more powerful than penicillin and tetracycline in destroying bacteria.  It can kill strains of bacteria that have become immune to other antibiotics.  Because garlic does not remain in your system constantly, bacteria cannot become immune to it.

Garlic fights infection and stimulates the immune system.  It can kill microbes and bacteria that cause the common cold, whooping cough, tuberculosis, botulism, vaginal and bladder infections, gangrene, diarrhea, staph infections, dysentery, and typhoid.  It has been known to treat a staph infection very effectively by rubbing crushed garlic into the infected area.  It will undoubtably burn, but that is a small price to pay for the result.

Studies have shown that raw garlic boosts the power of your immune system’s own cancer-fighting cells by 140-160%.  The sulfides contain cancer-preventative chemicals.  It acts as an anticoagulant, reducing the tendency of blood to form dangerous clots and enhancing the body’s ability to dissolve clots.  Garlic also contains a high level of selenium, which has anti-tumor properties. It may help remove heavy metals from the body as well.

Diallyl sulfides help the immune system and cholesterol.  It reduces blood presure, cholesterol, and unhealthy triglycerides.  Garlic also acts as a strong antioxidant – it reverses the precancerous damage done to cells by oxygen-free radicals.  It can prevent or relieve chronic bronchitis as well.

    Home Garlic Remedies

Garlic acts as a decongestant and an expectorant, clearing excess mucus that may be clogging your system.  If you have a cold and are very congested, try this remedy:  Boil a large piece of onion in water, then let simmer for 10 minutes.  Add some cayenne pepper, and fresh ginger root if youd like.  Then add chopped or pressed garlic to the water.  Strain and drink the broth.  For a quick fix, try just chopping up some raw garlic really fine and inhaling its fumes.  That should clear your airway pretty quickly.

If you suffer from athlete’s foot, a good garlic antibiotic will help you.  Chop up some raw garlic and let it sit for a few minutes.  Then add it to some water for a food bath.  Soak your feet for about 15 minutes.  You can save the water you use to reuse again later.

For an earache, crush a clove of garlic and let it sit in some warm olive oil for about 15 minutes.  Strain the liquid.  Soak a cotton ball in the liquid and put it over the ear.  The garlic can fight off the infection. The same works for a toothache.  Just chew on some raw garlic in the infected area.  It will burn at first, but will improve your condition overall.

Have you ever heard the myth that garlic eaters repel mosquitos?  Well that is false.  Just because a person eats a lot of garlic does not make them less susceptible to mosquito bites.  A more useful way to use raw garlic as a mosquito repellent is to actually rub fresh garlic on your skin.  You can rub it right on a mosquito bite to prevent infection.  Or, if you dont mind smelling like garlic, rub fresh garlic on exposed skin when you are outside.  If any mosquitos are brave enough to land on you, they wont be there for long!

Garlic is wonderful for first aide uses too!  To activate the garlic antibiotic, just crush and wait fifteen minutes.  You can rub it on some meat that could contain bacteria.  It will kill off the bacteria, making the meat safe to eat.  If you are out camping and have no source of clean water, add crushed garlic to unclean water and leave it overnight.  The water will taste a bit like garlic, but it will have killed off any dangerous bacteria.  When bitten by a snake, you can rub garlic into the bite.  The venom spreads through teh lymphatic system – so do the garlic sulfides.  It is important to note that garlic is not an anti-venom, but it can help fight off the venom while you get to a hospital.

    Garlic Breath Remedies

There are many garlic lovers out there, I myself am one of them.  But garlic breath isnt for everybody.  If you are interested in trying out all the medicinial uses for garlic, but are afraid of offensive breath, there are some remedies you can try.  There are odorless garlic supplements you can buy in your local natural foods store.  If you do want to eat garlic though, eating a slice of lemon afterwards or drink some lemon juice to help with the garlic breath.  If you are cooking with garlic, add some parsley to counteract the odor effects.  Or chew on some parsley while eating.  The simplest solution is sometimes the easiest – after eating a garlicy meal, just brush your teeth!

Using Apple Cider Vinegar daily will aide in weight loss.  It will be a progressive loss, which means it will stay off.  People who crash diet often gain all the weight back very quickly.  ACV stimulates metabolism and the potassium content ensures proper chemical balance, so more fat is burned.  In fact, because it is stored in the body in the form of glycogen, which has a time-release effect, it washes fat out of your body over an extended period of time.  It also acts as a natural appetite suppressant.  Try taking one tablespoon of ACV and two tablespoons of raw honey in unsweetened grapefruit juice 30 minutes before every meal – it will curb your appetite and regulate the thryroid.  If grapefruit juice is not readily available, just drinking water with one tablespoon of ACV and one tablespoon of raw honey once or twice a day will provide you with energy for the day and aide in burning fat.

    ACV for Stomach problems.

Apple cider vinegar is very helpful in a variety of stomach-related illnesses.  The reason being that it destroys bacteria, fungi, and viruses that make us sick.  A daily drink of ACV may help prevent mild cases of food poisoning.  In the case of food poisoning, one teaspoon of ACV with some water will help ease the symptoms if taken throughout the day.  If you are experiencing nausea or vomiting, try taking a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water, about one tablespoon of the cider vinegar should do the trick.  Drink a glass of this mixture throughout the day until you are able to take light food down.  Drink it at least five times a day for three days to really cleanse the body of whatever toxin made you ill.  Apple cider vinegar can also be taken as a preventative action.  Drink a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar about thirty minutes before eating a meal that may cause indigestion.  To avoid heartburn, mix one teaspoon of ACV with water and sip it slowly while you eat your meal. Apple cider vinegar contains maltic acid, a natural component of apples, which helps create stimulation to your body’s digestive processes.  Drink of glass of one tablespoon ACV (add honey if you wish) with water and drink before any meal.  It will aide in the digestion of the meal.

Apple cider vinegar also aides in problems related to aging.  Two tablespoons of ACV mixed with two tablespoons of raw honey with warm water will help flush acid crystals in the body that occur as a result of potassium deficiency.  These acid crystals could result in conditions such as bursitis, arthritis, and rheumatism.  Drinking this tonic will help treat and prevent these conditions.  It is also loaded with pectin, a potent soluble fiber that sweeps through your bloodstream, cleaning out bad cholesterol that clogs arteries.

Apple cider vinegar is also a very good home remedy for your hair!  Rinsing your hair in apple cider vinegar will help prevent and treat hair conditions like dandruff and split ends.  If you have dandruff, trying rinsing your hair in apple cider vinegar and leaving it for a half hour.  Do this three times a week until the dandruff disappears.  For an aromatic hair tonic, mix a small amount of apple cider vinegar with some aloe vera juice and purified water.  Add a couple drops of rosemary and lavendar essential oils.  Also try adding just one drop of peppermint essential oil.  You can spray this mix in your hair daily to keep your hair and scalp healthy without smelling like vinegar!

Apple cider vinegar is a very healthy household item to have around, and many people swear by it.  You can buy it in pill form as a supplement either on the internet or in a local natural foods store.  It also comes in liquid form.  The best way to use its healing properties is to buy the liquid form that is completely organic and unpasturized.  This is the form where it is the least acidic and usable by the body.

    Bittersweet Surprise

Did you know that high fructose corn syrup is just as safe as sugar? We should hold a celebration in honor of high fructose corn syrup for its triumph over nasty rumors that it is bad for you and has links to obesity. Or, at least, thats what the television tells me. New commercials were made by the Corn Refiners Association letting us know that everything we ever heard about HFCS has been misleading and that it really is just as safe as table sugar (Since when is table sugar good for you??). These commercials most likely stem from the Food and Drug Administration defining the term “natural” in July of this year and finding that high fructose corn syrup seems to meet the standards of being “natural”. But is this “sweet surprise” really as sweet as it seems? I decided to follow the advice of the commercial and “get the facts.” So lets look at the facts, shall we?

The production of high fructose corn syrup was first introduced in the 1970’s when something needed to be done about the corn surplus on farms across America. Due to overseas imports, the use of corn was dwindling. At the same time, consumers were becoming very concerned with the prices of food in their local grocery store. So the US Department of Agriculture found the answer: High fructose corn syrup. It was incredibly cheap to make and it was much easier to transport across the country than sugar, and it had an equal amount of sweetness! With production costs being lower, they could please consumers by replacing regular table sugar with this HFCS and therefore make prices of the products cheaper. And with it being an “all natural” sweetener, everybody wins! Right? Well… the corn producers certainly win….. but what about the consumers?
At the beginning of this year, the FDA stated that the term “natural” was to remain undefined after two petitions were brought to them, both from the Sugar Association and Sara Lee, to define the term to avoid consumer confusion over labels in the grocery store. The FDA decided to put off the subject, thinking it wasn’t too high an issue on the consumer’s mind. Has it been on your mind? Do you remember when drinks such as Capri Sun and 7UP shouted on the label that they were “ALL NATURAL”? That label was there until they were threatened with a lawsuit over it. The label was removed before any legal action was taken. I guess they didn’t have a good defense lawyer. Until a definition was given, the FDA would remain firm on what was outlined in 1993, which was as follows:

“FDA has not established a formal definition for the term ‘natural’, however the agency has not objected to the use of the term on food labels provided it is used in a manner that is truthful and not misleading and the product does not contain added color, artificial flavors, or synthetic substances. Use of the term ‘natural’ is not permitted in the ingredient list, with the exception of the phrase ‘natural flavorings’.”

In April of this year, the FDA stated that high fructose corn syrup was “not natural” since it used synthetic fixing agents during the chemical process of producing it. This caused an uproar, especially from the Corn Refiners Association, who maintained that HFCS was a “natural sweetener”. So they asked the FDA to reconsider its definition and its statement that a product containing HFCS was not “natural”. The Corn Refiners Association met with the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, where they explained in words and on paper the process of which HFCS was made. It seems that it is not made with synthetic fixing agents, nor is it made with any synthetic colors or ingredients. Since this is the case, it fits into the FDA’s definition of the term “natural.”
So, do you want to know how high fructose corn syrup is made? It is a very long process, but I will try to keep it short and simple. Very simply, it is produced by processing corn starch to yield glucose, then processing the glucose to produce a high percentage of fructose. But the process of breaking down that corn starch gets pretty complicated. Three enzymes are used for this breakdown. In this enzyme preparation, it was stated that no synthetic fixing agents were used. What they did not state is that two of these enzymes are already genetically modified to become more stable in the process. The process of making high fructose corn syrup is long and complicated, involving chemical breakdowns and vats of fermenting liquids, but in the end, it is cheaper to make, easier to transport, and has an equal amount of sweetness to table sugar. If you want to read the entire process, you can go to
http://www.westonaprice.org/motherlinda/cornsyrup.html for details. I simplified it, just like they do on the Corn Refiners Association’s website, www.hfcsfacts.com/sweetsurprise. On the commercials, they refer you to their website where you can get the facts you need to know about HFCS. This is what they say about the process by which it is made:

The corn wet milling industry makes HFCS from corn starch using a series of unit processes that include steeping corn to soften the hard kernel; physical separation of the kernel into its separate components-starch, corn hull, protein and oil; breakdown of the starch to glucose; use of enzymes to invert glucose to fructose; removal of impurities; and blending of glucose and fructose to make HFCS-42 and HFCS-55.

Wow, that sounds so simple and beautiful, doesn’t it? Well consider that compared to how it is described at the website I referred you to. What other facts to they have for you? Let’s go over some questions and answers they have for you.
You may have the question, “Is HFCS a ‘natural’ sweetener?” Well the website has this answer for you: “HFCS is made from corn, a natural grain product. HFCS contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients or color additives and meets the Food and Drug Administration’s requirements for the use of the term ‘natural’.” What they leave out is that the FDA also stated that it didn’t necessarily mean that a product containing HFCS could be considered natural.
What about the question, “Does the body process HFCS differently than other sugars?” Their answer: “No. HFCS contains approximately equal amounts of fructose and glucose, as does table sugar, honey, and many fruits. Once the combination of fructose and glucose found in HFCS and in sugar are absorbed into the blood stream, the two sweeteners appear to metabolized similarly in the body.” Wait….”approximately”? Sugar contains an equal amount of fructose and glucose. High fructose corn syrup has a higher concentration of fructose than glucose, I imagine that is why it is is called high fructose corn syrup. And “appears”? That term leaves room for interpretation, so I found out exactly how the body breaks down sugar and how it breaks down HFCS.
When you eat sugar, it breaks down into two simple molecules, one fructose, the other glucose, which are then absorbed by the body for usage or storage of energy. Glucose is th preferred energy source for the brain, and it is used by virtually all tissues and organs. Fructose, on the other hand, needs to go to the liver to be converted into either energy, fat, or glucose before it can be used by any other part of the body. Glucose has built in functions to assist the body as well. The pathway of break down will shut down if there is an excess amount fat and energy, thus preventing an accumulation of such. Also, when the body’s glucose level reaches a certain amount, it sends a signal to the brain that is it is full, so the hunger has been met and satisfied. Done and done. And what about fructose’s functions? Nonexistent. So if you consume massive amounts of fructose, it will result in a very high production of energy and fat. Also, it will seem as though your hunger has not been met, therefore making you consume more food than you really should. This is why it is said that HFCS has a link to obesity. Anything with a high level of fructose is going to have a link to obesity if it is consumed on a massive level. The website will tell you that there is no link between HFCS and obesity, but evidence suggests that anything with a high level of fructose will increase the amount of energy and fat produced, as well as provide an increase in appetite, and both together will cause an increase in weight. So no, it is not necessarily the high fructose corn syrup that is accelerating the obesity rate in this country, but it is definitely a contributing factor.
High fructose corn syrup was a cheaper, easier to handle product to replace sugar. Now that you know a little bit more about the facts of HFCS, you should know that there are other alternatives to sugar that can be healthier for you. The product I found to be most beneficial as a sweetener alternative is Stevia, a perennial shrub indigenous to South America. You can find Stevie powder extract in your local natural foods store. It contains protein, carbohydrates, vitamins A, B, and C, minerals iron, calcium, potassium, zinc, magnesium, has no calories, and is 300 times sweeter than sugar! It also promotes healthy teeth and gums, can help control diabetes, and can help with weight loss! For more on Stevia, you can go to: http://www.naturessunshine.ca/members/articles/Stevia.asp
I have to say, the Corn Refiners Association does a very good job promoting high fructose corn syrup. They are not trying to pass it off as a healthy substance. They are trying to give it a better reputation than has been promoted in the past. The commercials were brilliant. I saw myself in those commercials. If you haven’t seen them, it always has two people sitting down to drink some colored sugary beverage. One person is aghast at the thought of drinking it, saying “don’t you know that high fructose corn syrup is bad for you?” And the other person asks why, to which there is only a stupefied look. It seems that HFCS has had a reputation of being unhealthy, but with nobody really knowing why. I didn’t. That is why I took the advice of the commercials and I got the facts. I just got more facts than what they thought you needed to know. If you go to the official website of the Corn Refiners Association, you will find many articles trying to put focus on other issues to get your mind away from thoughts and questions about high fructose corn syrup. My advice: If you have questions on what you should stay away from in ingredients, or what your children should cut back on, do some research yourself and look at different sources, then make your own decision. Don’t listen to what commercials tell you or what “scientific studies” tell you. Chances are, there are “studies” that prove both sides to an issue. Decide for yourself, you’ll know what to do.

    Magnesium, Health and the Body

    Magnesium and Health

Most people have a magnesium deficiency in their body and don’t even realize it. Magnesium is a big part of human nutrition that affects almost every organ in the human body. If taken in the right amounts, it can treat and/or prevent the following:

Aging, alcoholism, autism, asthma, aggressive behavior, attention-deficit disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, arrhythmia, cancer, Cerebral Palsy, constipation, chronic fatigue, cluster headaches, cramps, diabetes, heart disease, AIDS, hypertension, kidney stones, menopause, migraines, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, stress, stuttering, TMJ, and more!

At a cellular level, cells can only produce energy if there is a certain level of magnesium present in the cell membrane to activate ATP energy. If someone is magnesium deficient, the cells slow and eventually stop making energy, they are not detoxifying, so organs stop functioning properly, leading to diseases.

    Magnesium Sources

There are a few ways to make sure you get your daily intake of magnesium, and there is no such thing as too much. First, you can find it in various foods such as spinach, legumes, nuts, seeds, halibut, yogurt, and avocados.

You can also take a daily supplement found in pill or liquid form. But if you are already deficient in magnesium in your body, it would taken many many pills to correct it, and that would result in explosive diarrhea. One oral supplement I have found to very useful is Natural Vitality’s product, Natural Calm plus Calcium. It provides you with magnesium, as well as the calcium you need. I add it to smoothies, but you can just mix it with water or juice and drink it on a daily basis.

The best, and cheapest, way to take magnesium is the trans-dermal way, through absorption of the skin. You can buy magnesium in oil form, gel form, or bath crystal form. I use Magnesium Oil, which is really not an oil at all, but a seawater extract. It is 35% magnesium chloride, and the balance is seawater and naturally occurring trace minerals. Because it is so easily absorbed into the skin, it is found to relieve many aches and pains. You just rub it in like a massage oil. To enhance the effect, after it is massaged in, put a warm, wet cloth on the area. It is possible to experience a little burning and stinging of the skin, which I experienced, so you can dilute it with water. Right now I use a 50/50 solution. I spray it all over my skin when I get out of the shower. As soon as the rejuvenation processes begin though, I will eventually be able to use it at full strength. It is also very beneficial to use it as a foot soak. Whatever is not absorbed, you can pour back into the bottle.
